If your KS5 reports are not showing any Value Added figures in the Headlines report, nor showing the dedicated 'Value Added' report area this could be for a number of reasons. This article details each of these possible reasons, and how to resolve them.
1 / KS4 Core Baselines
For Level 3 Value Added to be calculated, you would need to import the necessary baselines from when students were in KS4. To check your KS4 core baselines, navigate to DATA > Select KS5 & Cohort > KS4/EAP > Core Baselines.
The Core Baselines List shows the Baselines currently imported for each student. If no such baselines have been imported for the cohort, you will be directed to the Import Core Baselines screen instead (shown above).
You would need to obtain and import the following KS4 Baselines for your students:
- KS4 APS GCSE - The average points score of all GCSE qualifications taken at KS4. This will be used as the baselines for A Level and Other Academic qualification types (such as EPQs)
- KS4 APS All - The average points score of all qualifications taken at KS4, including any BTECs. This will be used as the baselines for Applied General qualifications.
| Please Note: Level 3 Value Added can not currently be calculated for any 'Tech Level' type qualifications, as the DfE have not released any previous National Data for them. If a QN code entered on the Matching page (GRADES > Matching) shows the Qual Type is a Tech Level, then this will not be included in Value Added in the reports until the DfE release subsequent National Data. |
For leavers cohorts, you can obtain these figures from the DfE Checking Exercise, while for current cohorts you may be able to obtain these baselines from Get Information About Pupils (GIAP). 2 / National Data
Once you have checked your KS4 Core Baselines, the next thing to check is that the relevant 'Value Added Data' has been selected. To do this, head to DATA > KS5 & Cohort > GRADES > National Data.
In the 'Value Added Data' section, if 'No Value Added national data has been selected' is shown, then you would need to click 'Edit VA Data' on the right hand side (as illustrated above) and select the relevant option based on the cohort you're working with.
At the time of writing, the latest available VA Data is '2019 Amended', as due to the COVID-19 pandemic the DfE have suspended the Value Added measure officially until the 2024 performance tables at the earliest. Therefore, this is the option we would recommend selecting for all cohorts from 2019 onwards.
Once this has been selected, click 'Save', and Analytics will populate the table below where possible based on the QN codes entered on the Matching page, providing there was data reported on them from 2019.

3 / Publish Reports with Headlines enabled
Once the above two steps have been completed, we would then recommend republishing the reports, ensuring Headlines are enabled.
To do this, head to GRADES > Publish Grades, then click 'Publish' next to the desired dataset or assessment collection. You will then be presented with a pop up window, where you should switch the Headlines toggle to 'Produce DfE-based Headline figures':
Once you are happy with the remaining selections, click 'Publish' to finalise. In the reports, you should now see L3VA pulled through to the Headlines report, and also have access to the dedicated Value Added reports. For further information on publishing, please see the article linked here.
