This article explains how to remove dashes (-) from Combined Science exam results, in the case that awarding bodies release their results in the format 6-5, 5-5, 5-4 etc.
Combined Science (awarded double 9-1 grades) should be set up as ONE qualification, using an EAP with a Split/Double Grade Method. If you currently have this set up as two separate single award Science qualifications on your Matching page, your figures will not be calculated in line with the DfE. For information on how to set this up accurately, see our guide below: KS4 Grade Method Examples: Double GCSE 9-1, AS Level, Short Course & Unreformed A*-G (Admin) |
Exam Results with Dashes
If on Results Day you receive/extract Combined Science exam results formatted to include a dash, you will need to REMOVE these dashes before uploading the grades into Analytics. To do this, you can use the Find & Replace functionality in Excel.
In the example above, grades are formatted as 6-5, 5-5, 5-4 etc. in the Science Combined column. However, Analytics would expect this to be formatted as 65, 55, 54 etc. without the dash.
To remove the dashes, within Excel either press CTRL + F on your keyboard or click Find & Select > Replace. You would need to ensure you do not have dashes anywhere else in your file, or select the column you want this to be applied to, otherwise all dashes will be removed
In the pop out, ensure you have the Replace tab selected. Then, enter – in the Find what textbox and leave the Replace with box blank. This tells Excel to replace any dashes (-) with nothing in your file, hence removing them. Then click Replace All.
Excel should then confirm how many replacements have been made and you should then find your Combined Science column no longer includes dashes. You can now run your file through the Analytics Excel Add-In, to prepare for upload.
