We would expect Progress 8 and SPI figures to differ, due to the calculations being different (outlined below). As such, we would recommend using these figures independently of one another, for example, SPI can be used to compare the performance and progress of individual qualifications against one another.
Subject Progress Index (SPI) |
Progress 8 (P8) |
- SPI takes into account students who have a KS2 Prior above 0 AND a grade uploaded for the specific qualification.
- Progress 8 takes into account all students with a KS2 Prior above 0 (regardless of whether they have a grade or not).
- SPI averages are based on Sisra schools who opted in to the specific Data Collaboration event (1,528 schools were opted in to the 2024 Data Collaboration).
- Official Progress 8 figures include all schools who report to the DfE.
- Separate SPI figures are calculated for English Language and English Literature.
- English P8 is based on either the higher grade of Lang or Lit (there aren’t separate P8 values for Language and Literature).
- Students taking only one of English Language or English Literature wouldn’t affect the SPI score for the other qualification.
- If a student has only taken English Language or English Literature then their grade wouldn’t be double weighted – therefore having a negative impact on English P8.
