This article aims to explain which figures are shown in the Student Overview report and how these are calculated.
Introduction
Throughout this article, you may find column headers that appear differently in your reports, depending on how these have been set up by a Sisra Administrator at your school:
AtL Category columns: AtL columns, highlighted orange throughout this guide, will display the names of Attitude to Learning categories set up by a Sisra Administrator at your school. For example, Effort, Homework, Behaviour, etc. If no AtL categories have been set up for the cohort, these columns will not be displayed.
EAP columns: EAP columns headers, highlighted blue throughout this guide, will only be populated if a Sisra Administrator at your school has populated your EAPs with expected grades.
Detailed Tab columns: Columns highlighted pink (or marked with *) throughout this guide will only be present in Detailed views (Detailed Overview) when viewing the Student Overview.
Students Shortcut
To access the reports, click REPORTS > KS5 > select a cohort. Then, select the DATA SET in the dropdown and click the ‘Students’ shortcut. You can then click on a student's name to open their overview report.
Student Overview Report
The Student Overview report can be accessed by clicking on a student’s name from any report view where ‘Group By Report Data’ is set to Students. This will open a sliding panel on the right, showing their personalised report.
The tabs allow you to switch between different versions of the Student Overview report, which focus on different figures:
-
Student Information tab displays individual filter values (e.g. Gender, EAL, etc.) that have been imported within the student data file(s) by a Sisra Admin at your school.
-
Simple Overview tab displays a condensed overview of the students’ grades, VA scores, Attitude to Learning judgements (if set up), and expected grades in each qualification, alongside an On / Above / Below track chart.
-
Detailed Overview tab displays a more comprehensive overview, additionally including Performance Cohort, Results Date, Points, Entries, KS4 Prior, VA Expectation, Residuals, EAP Diff (Whole & Sub), and EAP Baseline figures in each qualification.
- Headlines Summary tab displays a summary of the student’s performance in Headline measures such as Value Added and Best 3 A Levels. Additionally you can view how the student is contributing towards additional headline measures.
Simple Overview
Overall (On / Above / Below Track)
The Overall section allows you to view the count or percentage of each qualification the student is On/Above, Above, On, or Below Track within. This is based on the grades uploaded into the data set and the expected grades entered within the associated EAPs (if set up by an Administrator at your school), and is grouped by performance levels (depending on the qualifications the student took).
Qualifications
While in the Simple Overview tab, the Qualifications section displays a table listing each qualification the selected student has a grade uploaded for in that data set, alongside their class, grade, and EAP grade (if uploaded). If you have Attitude to Learning values uploaded for that data set, they will be displayed as well.
-
Class: The class that the student is in for that qualification. If a student is in more than one class, it will show ‘(Multiple)’.
-
Grade: Grade uploaded for the selected student for each qualification.
This will be colour coded to indicate if the student is above, on, or below track to achieve their expected grades (‘EAP Grade’ column), based on their EAP baseline, if set up.
-
VA: The difference between the student’s points scored in a qualification and their VA Expectation in that qualification. This figure is then divided by the size of the qualification to standardise it and then divided by 10 to give the difference in terms of A Level grades.
This will be colour coded to indicate if the student has a VA score that is greater than, equal to, or less than 0.
-
Uncapped English/Maths Progress: The uncapped difference between the student’s challenge points scored in their English/Maths qualification and their KS4 Prior English/Maths challenge points in that qualification. Note that this column will only display in the Qualifications - GCSE / Other section - so only if this student has a grade in a GCSE or other Level 2 qualification.
This will be colour coded to indicate if the student has a progress score that is greater than, equal to, or less than 0.
-
Judgement (AtL): Judgement imported for the selected student in that Attitude to Learning category, for each qualification.
This column will be colour coded based on the colours set up for each judgement by your Sisra Admin. Hover your mouse cursor over each judgement to view a description for this.
-
EAP Grade: The student’s expected grade for each qualification. This is determined by expected grades entered in the EAPs for the cohort, and the student’s EAP baseline.
Detailed Overview
Overall (On / Above / Below Track)
The Overall section allows you to view the count or percentage of each qualification the student is On/Above, Above, On, or Below Track within. This is based on the grades uploaded into the data set and the expected grades entered within the associated EAPs (if set up by a Sisra Administrator at your school), and is split into performance levels (depending on the qualifications the student took).
Qualifications
While in the Detailed Overview tab, the Qualifications section displays more details than just a student's grade in each qualification - such as points, entries, residuals, etc. This is useful to see how students are performing across all of their qualifications and can be used in discussions with other staff or parents during parents evening.
-
Class: The class that the student is in for that qualification. If a student is in more than one class, it will show ‘(Multiple)’.
-
Performance Cohort: The qualification type, taken from the ‘Type’ column for the associated cohort’s tab in the DfE’s List of Qualifications and Discount Codes spreadsheet linked in our article below. This determines the performance cohorts the qualification can count towards.
KS5 - DfE's 16 to 18 Qualifications, Discount Codes and Point scores -
Results Date: Date the grade was achieved or collected, set by your Sisra Admin.
-
Grade: Grade uploaded for the selected student for each qualification.
This will be colour coded to indicate if the student is above, on or below track to achieve their expected grades (‘EAP Grade’ column), based on their EAP baseline, if set up. -

-
Challenge Points: The challenge points awarded for the grade for each qualification. This is available for GCSE/Other qualifications.
-
Entries (A Level): The number of A Level equivalent entries that the qualification is worth. For example, grades A*-E for an A Level qualification are worth 1 entry. This is available for L3 qualifications.
-
Entries (GCSE): The number of GCSE equivalent entries that the qualification is worth. For example, grades 9-1 for a GCSE qualification are worth 1 entry. Note that this column will only display in the Qualifications - GCSE / Other section - so only if this student has a grade in a GCSE or other Level 2 qualification..
-

-
VA: The difference between the student’s points scored in a qualification and their VA Expectation in that qualification.
-
Judgement (AtL): Judgement imported for the selected student in that Attitude to Learning category for each qualification.
This column will be colour coded based on the colours set up for each judgement by your Sisra Admin. Hover your mouse cursor over each judgement to view a description for this.
-
Residual: The selected student’s residual for each qualification, calculated by the student’s standardised point score (grade points divided by number of entries) minus that student’s average point score across each qualification they have taken (of the same performance level). This is available for L3 or Tech Cert qualifications.
This compares the relative performance of a student, showing how well they have performed in one qualification compared to all qualifications they have taken, in that data set.
This column will be colour coded to indicate a positive or negative residual.
-
EAP Grade: The student’s expected grade for each qualification. This is determined by expected grades entered in the EAPs for the cohort, and the student’s EAP baseline.

Value Added
The Value Added section lists each VA eligible qualification the selected student has a grade uploaded for in that data set, alongside their class, grade, and VA scores. Each performance cohort eligible for VA (A Level, Academic, Applied General, and Overall Level 3) will be shown in separate columns. This allows you to use the Summary row to give average VA scores for each performance cohort. All figures in the VA columns will be colour coded to indicate whether the student has a VA score that is greater than, equal to, or less than 0, which represents the national average.
The eligibility status above the table shows whether the student is eligible to count for the measures. However the figures within the table will still be populated regardless of whether the student is included.
-
Performance Cohort: The qualification type, taken from the ‘Type’ column for the associated cohort’s tab in the DfE’s List of Qualifications and Discount Codes spreadsheet linked under the 'Performance Cohort' bullet point above. This determines the performance cohorts the qualification can count towards.
-
KS4 Prior: The KS4 Prior Attainment value for this student used to calculate Value Added. A Level and Academic qualifications will display the student’s KS4 GCSE Only APS here, whereas Applied General qualifications will display the student’s KS4 Overall APS.
-
Grade: Grade uploaded for the selected student for each qualification.
-
Grade Points: The points score awarded for the grade for each qualification. This is available for L3 or Tech Cert qualifications.
-
VA Expectation: The expected attainment for each qualification, derived from Value Added National Data using the relevant KS4 Prior Attainment value.
The Summary row shows the average of the VA Expectations for qualifications eligible to count towards VA for that performance cohort. This is calculated by summing the VA Expectations in that column and dividing this by the total sizes of the qualifications included. -
L3 Overall / A Level / Academic / Applied General VA: The difference between the student’s points scored in each qualification counting towards that performance cohorts VA score, and their VA Expectation in that qualification. This figure is then divided by the size of the qualification to standardise it and then divided by 10 to give the difference in terms of A Level grades.
For example, a VA score of 0.5 would indicate that the student is performing half a grade better than expected in that qualification. It’s worth noting that the following qualification types can be included in the following VA calculations:
- L3 Overall – Although not officially reported on by the DfE, this will include ALL VA eligible qualifications (A Level, AS Level, Academic, and Applied General).
- A Level – Eligible A Level and AS Level qualifications.
- Academic – Eligible A Level, AS Level and Academic qualifications.
- Applied General – Eligible Applied General qualifications.
VA scores will be colour coded to indicate if the student is performing above, at, or below the national average (0).
The Summary row shows the average of all qualifications’ VA scores that are eligible for that performance cohort, by multiplying each qualification’s VA score by its size, then dividing this figure by the total sizes of all qualifications.
These Summary row figures may not be equal to the student’s Average VA scores as they would appear on the Value Added report, as the figures on this page are an average of Value Added scores in all qualifications taken, whereas not all qualifications will count towards VA figures in Headlines (e.g. AS Level qualifications where an equivalent A2 has been taken).
Best 3 A Levels
This section displays whether the student is eligible to count towards the Best 3 A Levels measure as well as the qualifications eligible to count towards the measure. Students who have entered for fewer than 3 A Levels are only included in the measure if they have NOT entered for Other Academic, Applied General, or Tech Levels (greater than the size of an A Level).
The eligibility status above the table shows whether the student is eligible to count for the measures. However the figures within the table will still be populated regardless of whether the student is included.
-
Slot: The slot the qualification is counting for in Best 3 A Levels, ordered from highest performance to lowest.
-
Qualification: The name of the qualification that is counting towards each slot.
-
Grade: Grade uploaded for the selected student in the qualification for that slot.
-
Grade Status: This shows whether the grade for the qualification is included in the students Best 3 A Levels. If a student has more than 3 eligible qualifications of the same grade, the qualifications that come first alphabetically would be included in this.
-
Slot Points: The number of points awarded for the achieved grade.
The Summary row will show the average grade figure for the grades included in the measure and will also show average points and total points for the included grades.
Contribution to Headlines
This section shows how a student has contributed towards various School Headline figures and is broken down by Performance category, which includes: L3 Overall, A Level, Best 3 A Levels, AAB, Academic, Applied General, Tech Level, and Tech Cert. This also includes figures for both English and Maths Progress.
L3 Overall / A Level / Applied General / Tech Level / Tech Cert
L3 Overall, A Level, Academic, and Applied General will all display the same figures whereas Tech Level and Tech Cert will not include VA figures. If the figures for a particular category are blank it means that the student does not have a grade for a qualification included in the category.
