This article aims to explain how each figure in the KS3/4 Headlines Summary reports area is calculated.
The Headlines area shows overall figures of the cohort and includes the performance measures covered in the DfE’s Statement of Intent. Currently the Summary, Dashboard, Charts, and Filters reports are available, at Whole Cohort level.
Headlines - Summary
Cohort Summary
-
Cohort: Total number of students with the status ‘On Roll’ within that admin year (the
cohort count will change depending on the options/filters/measures selected).
Attainment/Progress 8 Summary.
Attainment/Progress 8 Summary
-
Average Total Attainment 8: Total of each student’s Attainment 8 scores divided by
the number of students in the cohort.
-
Average Attainment 8 Grade: Total of each student’s Attainment 8 scores divided by
the number of students in the cohort, divided by 10.
-
Average KS2 Prior Attainment: Average fine level achieved by Progress 8 eligible
students in the core KS2 subjects for that cohort.
-
Average Estimated A8: Total of the students’ estimated Attainment 8 scores in the
cohort divided by the Progress 8 Coverage (number of pupils included).
-
Average Total Progress 8: Sum of the Progress 8 scores for all eligible students,
divided by the Progress 8 Coverage (the number of pupils included). From 2018
onwards, this will use the total of your student’s adjusted Progress 8 scores. Positive Progress 8 is colour coded green, whereas negative Progress 8 is colour coded red.
-
P8 Upper / Lower Confidence Interval: For information on how these are
calculated and what they mean - please see our article here: How is Progress 8 Calculated?
-
Pupils Included (Progress 8 Coverage): Count and percentage of students included
in Progress 8, i.e. number of students with a KS2 APS above 0 (out of the cohort). If a
student has a KS2 APS of 0, they are excluded from Progress 8 figures but still
included in Attainment 8.
-
Pupils with Adjusted Progress 8 Scores: Count or percentage of students out of
the cohort who have had their Progress 8 score adjusted.
-
Average Total Progress 8 (Unadjusted): Sum of the unadjusted Progress 8 scores
for all eligible students, divided by the Progress 8 Coverage (the number of pupils
included). Since 2018, this is no longer officially reported on by the DfE and should be
used for internal information only.
Positive Progress 8
-
Pupils achieving a Positive Progress 8 score in ALL 4 baskets: Count and
percentage of students achieving a Progress 8 score greater than or equal to 0 in all 4
baskets (English, Maths, EBacc and Open).
-
Pupils achieving a Positive Progress 8 score in English/Maths/EBacc/Open:
Count and percentage of students achieving a Progress 8 score greater than or equal to
0 in a specific basket.
The percentages are calculated by taking the count of students achieving the specific positive
P8 measure, divided by the count of students in the “Pupils Included (P8 Coverage)” figure.
Basics 9-7 / 9-5 / 9-4
These sections display the same measures, however the grade range will differ between 9-7,

who have achieved a grade 5 or above in English AND in Maths.
-

a grade 5 or above in an eligible English qualification.
-
Students Achieving 9-5 in Maths: Count and percentage of students who achieved a
grade 5 or above in an eligible Maths qualification.
-
Students NOT Achieving 9-5 in English or Maths: Count and percentage of
students that have NOT achieved grade 5 (or above) in either English OR Maths.
-
Students Achieving 9-5 in English but NOT in Maths: Count and percentage of
students that have achieved grade 5 (or above) in English, but not in Maths.
-
Students Achieving 9-5 in Maths but NOT in English: Count and percentage of
students that have achieved a grade 5 (or above) in Maths, but not in English.
The percentage figures for 9-4 / 9-5 English and Maths grades are calculated based |

Want to learn more? Our Sisra Consultants run an online workshop called KS4 - Understanding Headline & Performance Measures Workshop designed for individuals who are interested in learning more about their school KS4 Headline and Performance Measures. Covering where the information is published, where the data comes from, and how to calculate and interpret the figures available in your IDSR and the Compare School Performance website.
There is also an interactive workshop specifically for KS4 Exam Results Analysis that has been designed for staff responsible for exam results analysis, and is ideal for those who wish to maximise the use of Sisra Analytics to analyse their exam data at Headline, Qualification, and Student level. |
